Two Perspectives To Life: Circle or Line?

Updated: Oct 14, 2021

Let me explain.

There are two views of history. The first view says that history is going nowhere. It’s a circle. This view is summarized by the saying: “History repeats itself.” It’s descriptive of a life lived apart from God. Everything remains pretty much the same. You wake up, brush your teeth, have breakfast, go to work, return home, sleep and up the next morning.

And everything repeats itself.

Meanwhile, the other view is that history has a beginning middle and an end. In this view, everything is moving systematically towards a definite end. It’s a straight line starting from the past, through the present and heading to the future. History is “His Story“: God’s story.

Though the repetitiveness of life cannot be eliminated, however, a life lived for God will follow the line towards a definite end. Even the mundane tasks fit in the bigger picture of things.

There you have it: Life as a circle or as a line. What’s your take?
